How to choose your anchor rode
- Check the windlass manual. Confirm the exact rope diameter, rope construction and chain link specification accepted by the installed gypsy.
- Choose the rope diameter. Consider boat size, displacement, anchoring conditions, deck hardware and the windlass specification—not length alone.
- Choose compatible chain. “5/16-inch chain” is not a complete windlass specification. Grade, pitch and link dimensions must match the gypsy.
- Choose chain length. More chain can improve abrasion resistance and catenary, but also adds bow weight and takes locker space.
- Choose total rode length. Base the length on expected water depth, tidal range, freeboard and the scope needed for local conditions.

It is commonly called 8-plait, 8-strand, plaited nylon or nylon brait. It is built from eight strands in a balanced plaited construction and behaves differently from conventional double-braid rope.
