Yale Nylon Brait’s flexible 8-strand construction is designed for smooth retrieval, compact storage, and dependable handling in a properly matched rope-chain windlass. Lewmar lists both 3-strand and 8-plait nylon compatibility for several of its rope-chain gypsies.

Compatible Lewmar Windlasses

1/2-Inch Yale Nylon Brait

Lewmar lists 1/2-inch 8-plait nylon for select gypsies used with:

• Lewmar V700

• Lewmar Pro-Series and Pro-Fish

• Lewmar V1, V2, and V3

• Lewmar CPX1, CPX2, and CPX3

Common compatible gypsies include Lewmar part numbers 68001024, RC0690, RC0761, 68000840, 68000360, 68001047, and 68001048. Compatibility depends on the chain paired with the line.

5/8-Inch Yale Nylon Brait

Lewmar lists 5/8-inch 8-plait nylon for select gypsies used with:

• Lewmar Pro-Series and Pro-Fish

• Lewmar V1, V2, and V3

• Lewmar CPX1, CPX2, and CPX3

Common compatible gypsies include Lewmar part numbers RC0860, RC0864, 68000361, 68000362, 68000363, 68001049, 68001050, and 68001051. The correct part number is determined by the chain size and calibration.

3/4-Inch Yale Nylon Brait

Lewmar’s published gypsy tables list 3/4-inch rope for certain V4, V5, and CPX4 gypsies, but specify 3-strand medium-lay or hard-lay rope rather than 8-plait. Confirm compatibility directly with Lewmar before using 3/4-inch Yale Nylon Brait in a Lewmar rope-chain gypsy.

Confirm Before Ordering

A windlass must be matched to all three components of the anchor rode:

1. Rope diameter and construction

2. Chain diameter and calibration

3. Exact windlass gypsy or replacement-gypsy part number

Check the part number stamped on the gypsy and consult the windlass manual before ordering. Rope from different manufacturers can vary slightly in finished diameter and firmness, so Lewmar recommends testing the complete rope-to-chain splice through the gypsy.
